Dear CALLeagues,

I hope this finds you well and enjoying the first stretch of summer. Our formal post-conference survey has now been released, and I encourage every member to take a few minutes to complete it. If you joined us in Moncton, please tell us what worked, what did not, and what you would like to see from future CALL/ACBD conferences. If you were not able to attend, we want to hear from you as well.

This survey is about more than feedback on one event. It will help us understand who is coming to our conferences, why they attend, what they value, and what barriers may be keeping others away. We also want to know what might make attendance easier or more compelling in future years. Your answers will help us improve next year’s conference in Saskatoon and plan more thoughtfully for the years ahead.

On that note, I am very excited to share some big news: CALL/ACBD will be heading to Toronto in 2028 to celebrate the Association’s 65th anniversary! Sixty-five years is a remarkable milestone, representing decades of leadership, collegiality, advocacy, scholarship, and service by law librarians and legal information professionals across Canada.

To encourage survey participation, we will be holding two draws for respondents. You may choose to enter one draw or both. The first draw is for a one-night stay in a Delta room at the Delta Beauséjour in Moncton. The second draw is for $100 off registration for the 2027 CALL/ACBD conference in Saskatoon.

Please complete the survey and help shape what comes next for CALL/ACBD. Wishing you all a relaxing and restorative summer, filled with wonderful moments.

The Canadian Association of Law Libraries is pleased to share the results of the 2025 CALL-TALL Salary Survey.

This is a joint salary survey report from the Toronto Association of Law Libraries (TALL), the Vancouver Association of Law Libraries and the Canadian Association of Law Libraries / L'Association canadienne des bibliothèques de droit (CALL/ACBD). The purpose is to determine benchmark employment remuneration received by members.

This survey reports data collected in June/July 2025. The previous survey was conducted in 2023. This analysis is based on 298 survey responses. Respondents were able to skip questions, which results in different “totals” for individual questions throughout this report.

Le comité du sondage salarial de CALL/ACBD–TALL–VALL 2025

In the current legal information technology landscape, having strong legal research skills and the ability to discern the relevance and accuracy of sources is of utmost importance.  These skills and competencies originate with the legal research training that law students receive in law school. Law librarians are the members of any faculty of law who should have the knowledge, expertise, resources and positioning to be able to meaningfully contribute to legal research training for law students. 

However, the availability of legal information expertise in the academic law library is no longer a given in Canada.  Economic forces moving university libraries towards consolidation and changes to their organizational structure mean that librarians with legal research training appear to be in decline in this country.

This, in part, is because University Librarians have dissolved the position of Head of Law Library (previously, the legally trained librarian on a campus).  In 2003, 17 out of 20 academic law libraries in Canada had a Head of Law Library. Today, just 9 of 23 academic law libraries have a Head of Law Library. This is a 67% decline in just two decades.

In the past, the Canadian Association of Academic Law Library Directors (CALL-D) maintained a document entitled Canadian Academic Law Library Standards. That Standards document was intended to list the resources and supports required to adequately support the legal research training of law students. It is also referenced in the Federation of Law Societies of Canada's Common Law Degree Implementation Committee: Final Report.

At the CALL/ ACBD Conference in Moncton in 2026, Annette L Demers, co-author of a two part series on the history and future of Academic Law Librarianship in Canada, presented the paper's findings and raised a call to action.

At this meeting, considering that the number of Directors across the country has been halved, a group of interested academic law librarians proposed that the Canadian Academic Law Library Standards document be reimagined and republished under the auspices of the CALL/ACBD Academic Law Library Special Interest Group.

Dear CALLeagues,

It was wonderful seeing over 160 of you in Moncton last month for a fantastic conference! I am still thinking about some of the sessions, from Dean Michael Marin's keynote on embedded librarianship and the role that law librarians have in legal education and practice, to sessions on generative AI use in law faculties and law firms, negotiating vendor contracts, and more. A huge thank you to co-chairs Michèle Leblanc and Laura Corscadden and the entire conference planning committee for all of their hard work. We have received wonderful feedback already, though a formal survey will be sent out in the coming weeks. Please do look out for that.

As I settle into the president's role, I want to thank Jason Wong for an outstanding year at the helm. Jason's focus on community building and financial sustainability moved us forward in real, tangible ways, and his commitment to inclusion set a standard I hope to maintain. Thank you also to Mary-Jo Petsche for her four years on the Board and for her mentorship as I found my footing.

Looking ahead, I want to share where I plan to focus my energy this year: partnerships and outreach. We have done incredible internal work strengthening our community, and I want to build on that by looking outward – developing relationships with vendors, connecting with regional and local law library associations, and exploring new collaborations that can support our long-term financial health. I look forward to working with your new executive board on these priorities and on finalizing CALL's first partnership prospectus.

As always, the vitality of this association depends on you. If you are a new member, or if you have been thinking about getting more involved, I encourage you to explore our committees and special interest groups. There are several leadership opportunities available right now, and including for new members!

On a personal note, as many of you know, I am expecting my third child and will be starting maternity leave as of June 12. Rest assured, I remain fully committed to CALL and this presidency throughout my leave – in fact, being away from the office will give me that much more time to dedicate to the association. If being 35 weeks pregnant didn't stop me from getting on a plane to Moncton, a new baby certainly won't slow me down either!

Nous avons déjà reçu d’excellents commentaires, et un sondage officiel sera envoyé dans les prochaines semaines. Veuillez surveiller vos courriels à cet effet.

Alors que je m’installe dans mon rôle de présidente, je tiens à remercier Jason Wong pour une année remarquable à la tête de l’association. L’accent qu’il a mis sur le renforcement de la communauté et la viabilité financière nous a permis de progresser de manière concrète et tangible, et son engagement envers l’inclusion a établi une norme que j’espère maintenir. Merci également à Mary-Jo Petsche pour ses quatre années au sein du conseil d’administration et pour son mentorat, qui m’a aidée à trouver mes repères.

En regardant vers l’avenir, je souhaite partager les priorités sur lesquelles je compte concentrer mon énergie cette année : les partenariats et le rayonnement. Nous avons accompli un travail interne incroyable pour renforcer notre communauté, et je veux bâtir sur ces bases en regardant vers l’extérieur – en développant des relations avec les fournisseurs, en établissant des liens avec les associations régionales et locales de bibliothèques juridiques, et en explorant de nouvelles collaborations qui soutiendront notre santé financière à long terme. Je me réjouis de travailler avec votre nouveau conseil d’administration sur ces priorités et sur la finalisation du tout premier prospectus de partenariat de l’ACBD.

Comme toujours, la vitalité de cette association repose sur vous. Si vous êtes un.e nouveau.elle membre ou si vous avez envisagé de vous impliquer davantage, je vous encourage à explorer nos comités et groupes d’intérêt spécial. Plusieurs opportunités de leadership sont actuellement disponibles, y compris pour les nouveaux.elles membres!

Sur une note plus personnelle, comme plusieurs d’entre vous le savent, j’attends mon troisième enfant et je débuterai mon congé de maternité le 12 juin. Soyez assuré.e.s que je reste pleinement engagée envers l’ACBD et cette présidence tout au long de mon congé – en fait, être éloignée du bureau me donnera encore plus de temps à consacrer à l’association. Si être enceinte de 35 semaines ne m’a pas empêchée de prendre l’avion pour Moncton, un nouveau bébé ne me ralentira certainement pas non plus!

The Professional Development Committees of the British and Irish Association of Law Librarians (BIALL) and the Canadian Association of Law Libraries (CALL/ACBD) are delighted to announce a new exciting initiative coming soon – the International Law Librarian Pen Pal Programme.

This informal programme aims to support professional development by connecting law librarians from BIALL and CALL who are interested in sharing experiences, perspectives, and ideas across jurisdictions.

Participants will be paired with a law librarian from the partner organisation and invited to connect once a month, primarily by email.

Those who prefer may also choose to meet online.

Each month, the Professional Development Committees will suggest a discussion topic to help structure conversations, while leaving participants free to explore related areas of shared interest.

The programme is intended to:

• Encourage international peer-to-peer learning
• Foster professional connections between law librarians in the UK, Ireland, and Canada
• Provide a relaxed space to discuss current challenges and opportunities in law librarianship

The time commitment is intentionally flexible, and the scheme is suitable for librarians at all career stages.

Further details, including registration, pairing arrangements, and the first discussion theme, will be shared once the programme begins.

Les comités de perfectionnement professionnel de la British and Irish Association of Law Librarians (BIALL) et de l’Association canadienne des bibliothèques de droit (CALL/ACBD) sont ravis d’annoncer le lancement imminent d’une nouvelle initiative très intéressante : le programme international de correspondance entre bibliothécaires de droit (International Law Librarian Pen Pal Programme).

Ce programme informel vise à soutenir le perfectionnement professionnel en mettant en relation des bibliothécaires de droit de la BIALL et de la CALL/ACBD souhaitant partager leurs expériences, leurs points de vue et leurs idées avec des collègues d’autres pays.

Chaque participant.e sera jumelé.e avec un.e bibliothécaire de droit de l’organisation partenaire et invité.e à échanger une fois par mois, principalement par courriel.

Les personnes pourront également choisir d’échanger en ligne si elles le souhaitent.

Tous les mois, les comités de perfectionnement professionnel proposeront un thème de discussion afin d’orienter les conversations, tout en laissant aux participant.e.s la liberté d’explorer des sujets connexes suscitant un intérêt commun.

Le programme vise à :

• Favoriser l’apprentissage entre pairs à l’échelle internationale ;
• Renforcer les liens professionnels entre les bibliothécaires de droit au Royaume-Uni, en Irlande et au Canada ;
• Offrir un espace décontracté pour échanger sur les défis et les débouchés actuels dans le domaine de la bibliothéconomie juridique.

Le temps à consacrer à ce programme est très flexible, et l’initiative s’adresse aux bibliothécaires d’horizons professionnels variés.

De plus amples renseignements, notamment sur l’inscription, les modalités de jumelage et le thème de la première discussion, seront communiqués dès le lancement du programme.

This will be my last message as your president, and to start, I am grateful to each of you for reading this monthly bulletin and staying informed about the business of CALL/ACBD. In an age when we are bombarded with emails (I am rather embarrassed by the number of unread messages in my inbox), the fact that this newsletter is opened by ~60% of you each month is a positive indicator of your engagement.

As the month of May coincides with our marquee annual conference and the transition of leadership on the Executive Board and some of our Committees and Special Interest Groups, it is my hope that some of you will elevate your engagement by lending your time and expertise as a volunteer. As I mentioned in my first message as your president in June 2025: “the ongoing vitality of our association is built on the dedication of our volunteers, and each of you has invaluable skills, expertise, and life experience with which to contribute” and nearly a year later, this remains very much true.

I look forward to celebrating our collective successes in Moncton in a few weeks, and to the orderly transition of the presidency to your next president Katarina Daniels.

Voici mon dernier mot à titre de président, et je tiens tout d’abord à remercier les membres qui lisent notre infolettre mensuelle et se tiennent informés des activités de la CALL/ACBD. En cette époque où nous sommes inondés de courriels (et je me sens plutôt gêné par le nombre de messages non lus dans ma boîte de réception), le fait que près de 60 % d’entre vous ouvrent cette infolettre chaque mois constitue un indicateur positif de votre engagement.

Comme le mois de mai coïncide avec la tenue de notre important congrès annuel et la transition à la tête du conseil exécutif et d’une partie de nos comités et groupes d'intérêt spécial, j’espère que certains membres souhaiteront renforcer leur engagement en donnant de leur temps et en partageant leur expertise en tant que bénévoles. Comme je l’ai mentionné dans mon premier mot à titre de président en juin 2025, « la vitalité de notre association repose sur le dévouement de nos bénévoles, et chacune et chacun d’entre vous possède des compétences, une expertise et une expérience de vie inestimables qui peuvent être mises à profit. » Et près d’un an plus tard, cela est toujours aussi vrai.

J’ai hâte de célébrer nos réussites collectives à Moncton dans quelques semaines, et de voir la passation de pouvoir se dérouler en bonne et due forme avec l’arrivée de votre prochaine présidente, Katarina Daniels.

With the announcement of the Law Via the Internet conference being held this year in Montreal, CALL/ABCD will be opening the application period for the 2026 Janine Miller Fellowship in the coming weeks.

The purpose of the Fellowship is to provide funding for one CALL/ACBD member to attend the Law via the Internet Conference; expenses up to a maximum of $2,500 will be covered.

With the release of the program for the annual conference, I hope to see many of you in Moncton.

This varied and engaging program is the tangible result of the vision and leadership of our Conference Planning Committee Co-Chairs Michèle Leblanc and Laura Corscadden, with guidance from our Second Vice-President Pia Williams, along with the hard work of the volunteers on the subcommittees, and the many speakers who will be sharing their expertise - how fortunate we all are that these currents will converge in a month’s time in the “Hub City”.

Leading up to our flagship event, the first part of our annual general meeting will be held on Monday, May 11, 2:00PM-2:30PM ET. While the formal notice will soon be sent to your inboxes, I could not wait to let you all know now, as this is the forum in which our many committees and Special Interest Groups report on and celebrate their activities and achievements from the past year.

As we prepare for our most important events of the year, our website will, of course, continue to be updated. As you make your way through the website and happen to find an error that needs to be corrected or an update that needs to be made, you can now submit it using the new website update request form. This form provides you and our National Officer Laura Romero with a clearer, more consistent and systematized way to make timely updates to our organization’s online home.
